Project status

Updated October 3, 2026.

Implemented

Password-encrypted local data file with create, unlock, and lock; overview and cash flow, manual accounts, transactions, QFX/OFX/QBO and flexible CSV import with duplicate detection, credit card statement PDF import (balance, limit, APR, minimum, due date), account register with reconciliation, custom categories and rules, bulk editing, transfer matching, split transactions, receipts stored encrypted, refunds and reimbursements, promotional card balances, buy-now-pay-later plans and loans, a 30/60/90-day cash-flow forecast with payment matching, suggested bills, and reminders, budget groups with rollover and monthly adjustments, goals with earmarks and debt payoff, reports with CSV export, import history with Undo, automatic encrypted backups with restore, password change, automatic locking, dated balances with their source, remembered CSV column settings per account, storage for up to 250,000 transactions, CSV export, budgets, savings goals, JSON backup/restore through the system Save dialog, credit-card details, and recurring bills and calendar. The layout adapts to narrow windows.

CI checks formatting (Prettier, rustfmt), lint (ESLint, Clippy), TypeScript and Rust unit tests, types, and the interface build. A separate workflow builds unsigned macOS and Windows installers. Automated tests cover financial calculations, validation, bill recurrence, Plaid transaction mapping, OFX and CSV import (fictional files in several bank styles), statement summaries in seven fictional layouts, import history and Undo (edits kept, card details restored field by field), older statements not replacing newer balances, change-only saves, and the encrypted file (encryption at rest, wrong passwords, version conflicts, upgrading first-release files, partial writes refused, password changes, daily backups and pruning, restoring, and restores that fail putting the file back). They also cover refunds and income categories, receipts kept encrypted and deleted with their transaction, promotional balances and statement promotion tables, installment schedules, the cash-flow forecast, payment matching, suggested bills, reminders, budget rollover and adjustments, goals, and every report. The desktop app, including QFX and CSV import, Undo, filling a card from a statement PDF through the system file picker, and opening a file saved by the previous release, has been run end to end on Linux; macOS and Windows installers are built in CI but have not yet been tried on those systems.

Roadmap

The owner's order. Core import, budget, bill, and promotional tracking work without a bank-data subscription; optional services (SimpleFIN, Plaid, price feeds, AI) have their costs shown before they are turned on.

  1. Dependable imports. Done: transactions in their own table, import history with Undo, dated balances with their source, older statements never replacing newer balances, remembered CSV settings, same-file detection, automatic dated encrypted backups with restore, password change, locking after inactivity. Statement PDFs read Discover, Capital One, Citi store-card, and Synchrony/PayPal layouts. Remaining: other issuers' layouts as statements become available; trying the installers on macOS and Windows.
  2. Register and review. Done: opening and running balances, cleared status, statement reconciliation with register vs. bank balance; custom categories, rename/categorize rules applied on import and to past entries, learned categories, bulk category/cleared/delete, transfer matching across accounts, split transactions, encrypted receipt attachments, refunds and reimbursements, loan payments split into principal and interest, an Interest & fees category. Original plan: opening and running balances, cleared status, statement reconciliation (calculated vs. bank balance); custom categories, merchant renaming rules, automatic categorization, splits, bulk edits, receipt attachments; matching transfers and card payments across accounts; consistent refunds, reimbursements, loan principal, interest, and fees.
  3. Credit cards and promotional interest. Done: promotional balances per card (true 0% or deferred interest) with deadlines, required monthly payments, deferred interest at risk, Overview reminders, and promotions read from PayPal Credit and Synchrony statements. Remaining: other issuers' promotional tables as statements become available. Original plan: per-card balance, limit, utilization, statement balance, minimum, due date, APR, last update; separate promotional offers per card (true 0% vs. deferred interest), payoff targets, required payments, expiration reminders. Promotional balances are portions of the card debt, never added twice.
  4. Installment loans and BNPL. Done: plans grouped by provider with amortized schedules, recorded payments split into principal and interest, refunds, early payoff, net worth. Remaining: reading plan statements or emails (needs sample files). Original plan: Affirm, Klarna, Amazon plans, auto and personal loans grouped by provider with individual schedules; manual entry and statement PDFs first; principal, interest, and scheduled payments kept distinct.
  5. Payment and cash-flow planner. Done: every-two-weeks, quarterly, and finite schedules, income schedules, card payment plans, a 30/60/90-day forecast with the lowest balance and shortfall warnings, matching imported payments, suggested recurring bills, in-app reminders when Folio opens. Remaining: operating-system notifications while Folio is closed (needs the Tauri notification plugin and a background process). Original plan: one calendar for bills, subscriptions, card payments, and installments; biweekly and finite schedules; expected income; 30/60/90-day checking forecasts with the lowest projected balance; matching imported payments to scheduled ones; desktop reminders.
  6. Optional bank connections. Not started; waiting on the owner's decision. SimpleFIN first (setup token pasted into Folio, access credential encrypted locally), Plaid optionally through a separate service holding the secret (Sandbox first). All methods feed the same accounts and history. This is Folio's first network access and needs an explicit decision and a narrow security-policy exception.
  7. Budgets, goals, reports. Done: budget groups, single-month adjustments, rollover and irregular-expense funds, goal kinds with earmarked accounts and debt payoff, Reports (category with previous-period comparison, payees, income vs. spending, recurring costs, interest and fees, debt, net worth) with CSV export. Debt history starts with this version, since earlier snapshots recorded only net worth. Original plan: category groups, monthly adjustments, rollovers, irregular-expense funds; goals that separate earmarked money from extra assets; reports by category and merchant, income vs. expenses, recurring costs, interest and fees, debt reduction, net worth.
  8. Investments and assets. Not started; needs sample brokerage files and a decision on price data. Imported holdings, trades, dividends, fees, cost basis; crypto and personal assets; optional price updates later.
  9. Assistance and access, later. Not started. A read-only assistant that links answers to records; encrypted transfer between computers, multi-device sync, automatic updates, a mobile companion. External AI processing only by explicit choice.

Also pending: signing and notarizing the macOS app with the owner's Apple Developer account, and deciding on Windows signing.

Bill due dates are reminders; Folio does not execute payments.
